Analyze Your Competition Before Moving Forward

When you initially launch your venture to make money from home, it is absolutely critical that you take a hard, unbiased look at your direct competition. This will aid you in gaining the insights which will be needed. In fact, such an analysis of your competition should be one of the key parts of your business plan.

Therefore, before you give up on your nine to five, you need to scout your competition. Some of the areas which you should focus on when scouting your competition are analyzing their sales copy, their unique competitive advantage in the market, as well as their advertising. If you do nothing else, make sure that you do not ignore any of these three items as they are critical to your ability to gain market share.

Do not hesitate to contact your potential future competitor directly in order to gather as much information as possible. Most business owners will welcome the opportunity to tell you about their business. Just make sure that you do not mention that you plan to cut into their market share in the future. You want your competitor to be as candid as possible.

Additionally, you should gain access to every single promotional material which your direct competitor utilizes. Study these materials, and determine what they are doing well, and what they can do better. If they deal with products which need to be shipped, find out what their shipping and handling rates are, and determine if you will be able to offer better rates. You will be surprised at how much shipping and handling costs can influence a buyer's decision. If a buyer can purchase the same or very similar item from you for less because of lower shipping and handling rates, there is a good chance that the buyer will become your customer. This is especially true for first time buyers.

Another reason why I stress the importance of analyzing your competition prior to entering their market is to determine if it is feasible to even enter the market. Some businesses in highly specialized niche markets are on the verge of going out of business. Often times the niche simply is not large enough to sustain the expenses of the business, much less make it profitable. If you can recognize this fact prior to entering into a highly specialized niche, you can avoid a potentially negative business venture.

Conversely, you may be able to recognize why a business is not performing well in a highly specialized niche by analyzing their business practices. Perhaps the business has chosen to remain regional, completely ignoring the international demographic which would fit neatly into their niche. In such a situation, you can capitalize on their oversight by serving this broader demographic.

There is a saying which I want you to keep in mind before taking action to make money from home. The saying is, "Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare". In other words, visualize and plan, then work your plan. Do not let anything stand in the way of your dreams.
