The Rules of Entrepreneurial Success

Now is a great time to be an entrepreneur and make money from home. Over the past ten years, technology has served a role in leveling the playing field, and in turn, propelling an entrepreneurial revolution. Did you know that as an entrepreneur in the Internet age, you now have more access to information than at any point in history? Such high access to information allows you to make the most intelligent choices, and be more fluid with your business in a constantly changing market. Additionally such abilities enable you to target new markets more quickly.

However, while it is now much easier to become an entrepreneur, becoming a successful entrepreneur requires some effort on your part. If you wish to become a successful entrepreneur, you must look at the big picture, and follow a plan from beginning to goal. Below I have stated four rules which every aspiring and practicing entrepreneur should follow as entrepreneurial law.

1) Do Not Quit Your Day Job

No, I am not making fun of your singing. Rather, I am simply stating that you should consider first starting your business part-time if you are already working, and have a steady paycheck. Keep in mind that it generally takes a new online business six months to one year start generating a profit. You do not want to make being able to make your house payment contingent on the anomaly that your business will be one of the rare few which turn a substantial profit immediately. Instead, begin with what you are able to manage both financially and time-wise, then transition as your business grows.

2) Locate Your Niche

Specialization is the word of the day. General stores are long gone. This is particularly true online. Customers are looking to purchase what they want from specialty stores so that they have a large variety of that product to choose from, and they can find it quickly. Your task is to find a need (ie. a product or service that a specific group of people could largely benefit from), and fill the need. Since you cannot compete with the big stores, you have to focus on a niche and provide for that niche in a manner which is far superior than the big guys can.

3) Maintain An Online Presence

If you are planning to exercise your entrepreneurial spirit with something other than an online business, consider that the Internet can still play a large role in your company. Maintaining an online presence dismisses the limitations of proximity, and broadens your customer base exponentially. The Internet is also a great tool for introducing yourself to your customers and potential customers.

4) The Refusal To Give Up

Becoming a successful entrepreneur requires creativity, energy, focus, and a drive to keep going even in the face of failure. Very few people are aware of the fact that before Bill Gates became an extremely successful entrepreneur with the creation of Microsoft Windows 3.0, he created Microsoft Windows 1.0 and 2.0, which both were disasters. I suppose that some would argue that you could throw Windows ME, and Windows Vista in that list as well.

Nevertheless, in the face of failure, Bill Gates refused to give up. Had he given up, he probably would be making five dollar foot longs right now. However, it is the determination and refusal to accept failure as a final answer which will always separate successful entrepreneurs from unsuccessful ones.

Rieva Lesonsky, editor-in-chief of Entrepreneur Magazine says, “Arm yourself with optimism to get beyond the ‘No’ or the trouble. There’s nothing wrong in failure—just don’t repeat the same mistake!”

With that being said, everyone with the vision, plan, and ambition possesses the requisite equipment to make money from home as a successful entrepreneur. The four points mentioned above should be followed like black letter law.
