What Do Medical Transcriptionists Do?

Since the majority of physicians have terrible handwriting (stereotype), Medical Transcriptionists listen to dictation from physicians and other medical professionals, and transcribe them into electronically formatted documents, such as autopsy reports, operating room notes, discharge summaries, and other documents, which will eventually become part of the patient's medical record. However, in order to transcribe accurately, medical transcriptionists must speak the language. In other words, all medical transcriptionists must understand anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, and various treatments.

Prerequisite Training

What I have found while researching Medical Transcription, is that you cannot just show up and expect to be a Medical Transcriptionist. Training is an absolute must have. This is a fairly involved professional career, which requires some medical and technical education. If you do not believe me, ask the American Association of Medical Transcription. They define the requirements of Medical Transcription as follows:

"Medical understanding is critical for the professional medical transcriptionist. The complex terms used in medicine are unlike the language of any other profession."

That being said, it is somewhat clear at this point that Medical Transcription requires some practical medical knowledge. I am positive that a Medical Transcriptionist must at least have a working understanding of medical language, anatomy, physiology, disease process, pharmacology, laboratory medicine, and the internal organization of medical reports. That being said, a Medical Transcriptionist has to be a specialist of the medical language, who is aware of the standards and requirements which apply to health records, as well as the legal significance of medical transcripts themselves.

All in all, most people who are looking for opportunities to earn money online or make money from home are probably looking for something with a little less of a learning curve than Medical Transcription. However, a person looking for a career, who is not concerned with the time and effort required by this field, might have found what they have been looking for. We, on the other hand, find Medical Transcription to be "Unsexy and Involved", and are therefore going to pass on becoming Medical Transcriptionists.
